A Bit About North East Wandsworth

History

The bustling character of North East Wandsworth is a relatively new phenomenon, as this area was a quiet hamlet until two hundred years ago. In fact, as an administrative centre, it had no existence at all; a fact which seems hard to believe when you visit its busy centre today. Before the nineteenth century, it was mainly countryside, fields and woods, characterised by the three river valleys of Beverley, the Wandle and Falcon Brooks, all of which took a meandering course to the River Thames.

The pace of life was slow and very few events of importance were recognised in this rural spot. But in the subsequent years, the small rural hamlets of the area grew rapidly and became towns in their own right, with Wandsworth becoming rapidly complemented by the new town centres of Clapham Junction, Balham, Tooting and Putney. The pace of change, work in London and migration patterns meant that the new towns were hotly in demand from people who wanted to work and study in London and its accessible surrounding areas. More recently, there has been further significant change along the industrial riverside, with high-end riverside accommodation and other features being developed for locals to enjoy.

Location and Travel

Located in South Wwest London and with a population of over 330,000, the area Wandsworth has excellent travel links into the city and the UK as a whole, with busy road networks, rapid access to the M25, buses that run 24 hours, the overground trains from Clapham Junction and Wandsworth Common and various underground railway stations. There is also the local river taxi which is used heavily by commuters and visitors alike.
